 LCD TVs

alt

Love em' or hate them LCD TVs are becoming more and more popular and rule of thumb seems to be the bigger the better! This is great until, as with most LCD screens you decide you want your pride and joy attached to the wall,

Nowadays, you can find various types of TV wall brackets for your LCD or Plasma TVs. Mainly, there are five types of TV brackets:

flat mount
cantilever
ceiling
tilt
swivel.

You can opt for any one of these according to your needs, budget, and the style and layout of your home. However, before buying one of them, you need to understand some essential factors that will affect your buying decision.

The weight-carrying capacity of the TV bracket

This is one of the most important factors to consider when buying a TV bracket. Brackets are specially made in such a way that they can carry a certain amount of weight. This means that different types of TV wall brackets have different weight-carrying capacities, so you need to buy one that can safely and securely support your expensive LCD or Plasma TV.

Screen size

Similarly to the weight-carrying capacity, all TV brackets are made in such a manner that they can only fit certain TV sizes safely. Therefore, make sure that you get a TV bracket appropriate to the size of your TV.

Placement and installation

You should ensure that the wall you are installing your TV bracket on is secure enough to support both the bracket and the TV.

If you have bought a new tv and are unsure which bracket to use why not contact one of our handymen who will be happy to not only advise on the right products but also carry out all work

Mould & Mildew

It's hard to enjoy a relaxing soak in the bath when the ceiling is covered in nasty, black mould

The fungus that is caused by damp isn't just an unpleasant decoration; it's a potential health hazard. Research has shown that the spores produced by mould can aggravate asthma and the bacteria they carry can cause infections. This hazard can be worse for vulnerable groups like the elderly, babies, young children and pregnant women.

Various triggers cause damp. The most common is a lack of ventilation. If warm, damp air is trapped in a confined space, like a bathroom or kitchen, moisture will build up providing the ideal breeding ground for mould and mildew.

How to prevent condensation
Condensation is a major cause of damp. When moisture trapped in warm air hits a cold surface it becomes water again. (just like it does on a bathroom mirror) We produce over a litre of water as condensation everyday just by breathing. If you just add a litre for washing, another three litres for cooking and five litres for laundry - the average home becomes a very damp place.

If the moisture can't escape, it will settle on cold surfaces and soak in. So you might find damp patches behind wardrobes in the bedroom, window reveals, corners of the bathroom and at the back of kitchen cupboards.

Prevention is always better than cure, so to avoid damp patches that can lead to mould make sure that your home is adequately heated and ventilated. Extractor fans will help get rid of moisture in the kitchen and bathroom, if you have a extractor ensure it is free of dust on blades (simple vacuum to clean) and that the extractor ventilates directly outside and not into a loft space,  If you don't have a extractor simply open the window and keep the door shut until the condensation has cleared.

If you have to dry clothes indoors, do so in a cool area, preferably with a window open. They may take longer to dry, but less condensation will occur.

altPets will also increase the chances of mould especially if they sleep on your bed as you will be amazed at how even a small dogs breath will significantly increase the condensation in a room

One of the best product ranges we have come across that will actually reduce the growth of mould and mildew is the Zinsser paint range, its really does keep mould and mildew at bay

If you have a problem with mould and mildew and want to find out what can be done to stop it why not contact one of our handymen who will be happy to not only advise on the right products but also carry out all work

Why call a handyman instead of a traditional tradesman?

It really boils down to the type of job you have that needs attending to, traditional tradesmen tend to concentrate on larger more specific jobs, like a carpenters, painting and decorators and plumbers, this is fine if you have large jobs to be done but more and more home owners and business owners have a list of smaller but just as annoying jobs that they want completed.

Although some see a handyman as less skilled than your average tradesman this assumption would be wrong as where say a carpenter would come and fit you a new door or new skirting or a plumber a new tap or fix a burst pipe a when they turn up they pretty much know what they are going to be done before they arrive,  where as a handyman tends to expect the unexpected!, a good handyman will not just be a skilled person but also a practical one as well,  and where a tradesman will just replace an item a handyman will firstly look to see if it more cost effective to repair repair a broken item and fix it if possible

There’s no limit to the type of jobs a handyman can sort for you, call him over to unclog the sink fix that leaky toilet, change those sky high light bulbs around the house or ask him to take a look at that sticking door lock on the way out.

Good handymen usually just charge an hourly fee no matter what kinds of tasks are completed. You will be hard pressed to get a painter to check the air in your tyres, take a heavy item out the loft or fix a stuck office drawer, but a handyman is skilled in all areas and always willing to help no matter what the job.

If you have jobs that need attending to around your home or office why not look through the profiles of the handymen listed on our site, not only can you read all about our handyman and the jobs they can do for you, you will also find a photo and most importantly what hourly rates they charge and to help you make up your mind which one to choose you can see the feedback that previous customers have left them
